634

Seventeenth-century documentary sources tell us that in the year 634, in the final stretch of the Visigoth period, a terrible drought struck the Iberian peninsula for a period of seven years, fountains, rivers, and most of the grove, including olive trees planted in the time of the Romans.

 

711-725

Sometime in the first century of the 8th century, the newly installed Muslim settlers were introduced from Ifriqiya (now Tunis) a new olive plant, which due to its agronomic characteristics adapted perfectly to the Southern / Eastern Iberian environment. This variety of olives is called Ólea Europaea Argentata, also known as: Lucio, Silver, Early, Lucío, or Illoreño. The new plant was imported by means of a fleet of ships, and the place chosen to begin its implantation was the environment of the village of Íllora. These facts are related by Al-Tignari, agronomist of the 12th century Granadino in his treatise; "FLOWER OF THE GARDEN AND RECREATION OF THE MINDS". The landscape of countryside, with gentle hills of open land of Granada, is carpeted of olive trees Lucios throughout the centuries.

 

1319

June 25, the Infantes Pedro and Juan de Castilla seize the town of Illora when they go to devastate the Vega de Granada. The impatience to take the city pledges the olive trees of its logging. The desert of Granada, occurred at the Cerro de los Infantes, near Pinos Puente.

 

1430

A military expedition commanded by the adelantado of Andalusia: Diego de Rivera, penetrates by the valley of the Genil burning crops and cutting trees, attacks and devastates the farms of Loma de Táura and Alomartes, nevertheless, the primitive and near olivar of the village of Illora is saved, thanks to the protection that the imposing fortress of his castle gives him.

 

1484

June 8, the troops of the Catholic Kings, with D. Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba to the front (The Great Captain), make room for the castle of Íllora, through the use of artillery. After a brief siege the fortress surrenders, again the olive grove does not suffer any damage and Queen Isabel herself is impressed by him in his visit to the newly taken villa.

 

1571

On the occasion of the rebellion of the Moors in the Alpujarras, the Moors of the town of Illora, like the rest of those who reside in the ancient kingdom of Granada, are deported. The Moors are forced to sell hastily all their goods, and the already legendary olive grove Lucio of the village changes owners.

 

1750

Catalina Perez Prince, of state maiden, owns a plot with 54 olive trees. Maria Giménez Navalosa, widow, has two olive groves with 17 and 27 olive trees respectively ..., and so on up to a total of 25237 olive trees, of which; 18857 belong to secular neighbors, and 6379 to ecclesiastics. These are some of the data reflected, regarding the municipality of Illora, in the cadastre of the Marqués de la Ensenada.

 

1795

Godoy (Prince of Peace) receives from Carlos IV as a gift, La Dehesa Baja de Illora. Knowing the richness of olive oil that the olive grove of IIllora produces, broke and plant 30000 new olive trees in this estate, and builds its own oil mill, with this are already nine existing in the locality.

 

1870

The owners of the Dehesa del Generalife in the Alhambra, descendants of ancient Moorish nobles, paying homage to their ancestors, plant olive trees on the red hill of the Alhambra.

 

 

1936

August 19, Federico García Lorca dies murdered next to an olive tree. The proximity of his hometown to the town of Illora, and the friends he had in this town, propitiate the relationship of the poet with the pike of Illora, which ignite his imagination and impregnate his poetic work with continuous references to the olive tree:

The productions of olive trees penniless, have nothing to do with the new intensive crops of other varieties more productive and easily machinable. Since 1980, hundreds of olive trees of incalculable historical and aesthetic value fall under the ax, every century that contemplates them is not enough to guarantee their lives.
